Jamaica airports to introduce Arrivals Duty-Free shops

Passengers arriving at the Norman Manley International Airport (NMIA) will soon be able to shop on arrival at the airport, the Minister of Tourism, Edmund Bartlett has said.

Addressing the opening of the new British Airways Executive Club Lounge at the Norman Manley International Airport on Tuesday, June 2, 2009, the Minister announced that the Jamaican Cabinet had just approved the amendment to the relevant Act to allow incoming passengers to purchase goods at the airport.The minister said that this would be "a great income-generating opportunity for the shops at NMIA. Congratulating BA on its "63 years of service to Jamaica, excellent customer service, focus on safety and security and innovative products", Minister Bartlett said that NMIA was being upgraded "to provide more than just a place to board or disembark an aircraft"."We hope to make the NMIA a destination within itself that provides efficiency, diversity and attention to passenger's comfort", the Minister said explaining that "the upgrade of the airport included enhancing the retail mix, upgrading and expanding passenger terminals and ensuring closer integration of the airport shops and facilities."
